Resigning without burning bridges

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to give a reason for resigning?

No. A simple "I have accepted a position elsewhere" or no reason at all is fine. Your manager may ask in conversation, and you can choose how much to share.

Can I resign by email?

Yes. Email is the normal way to deliver a resignation letter today. Tell your manager in person or on a call first if you can.

Can I ask to shorten my notice period?

You can ask; your employer does not have to agree. Some Indian employers let you buy out the remaining notice with salary. Put any agreement in writing.

What if my employer asks me to leave immediately?

That can happen, especially when moving to a competitor. In many countries you are still paid for the notice period, as pay in lieu or garden leave; check your contract.
