Free Excel templates

Spreadsheet templates for budgets, invoices, payroll, projects, school and home, each built with real formulas, dropdown lists and colour highlights rather than pictures of a table. Fill one in right here in your browser and watch the totals update, then download it as an .xlsx file that opens in Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers or LibreOffice.

How to use these templates

  1. Pick a template by the job: a budget for money at home, an invoice or quotation to bill a client, a timesheet or attendance sheet for staff, a Gantt chart or tracker for a project.
  2. Open it and type straight into the grid. Shaded cells are inputs; cells with formulas work themselves out, and hovering over one shows the formula.
  3. Replace the sample rows and anything in [brackets] with your own details, and use the dropdowns for statuses, categories and shift codes so the totals count them.
  4. Download the .xlsx. In Google Sheets, choose File, then Import, and upload it; formulas, dropdowns and colours come with it.

Frequently asked questions

Are these Excel templates free?

Yes. Every template is free to fill in and download, for personal or business use, with no sign-up and no watermark.

Do the templates work in Google Sheets?

Yes. Download the .xlsx, then in Google Sheets choose File, Import, Upload. Formulas, dropdown lists, frozen headers and colour highlights carry over.

Do they use macros?

No. Everything runs on ordinary formulas and conditional formatting, so there are no security prompts and they work in Excel for the web, on a Mac and on phones.

Can I edit the template before downloading?

Yes. Type into any cell on the template page and formulas recalculate as you go; the download includes your changes. Use Reset to go back to the sample.

Which versions of Excel open these files?

Excel 2010 and later, Excel for Mac, Excel for the web and the Excel mobile apps, as well as Google Sheets, Apple Numbers and LibreOffice Calc.
