How to use PDF to Excel
- Choose one or more PDFs.
- Pick one sheet per page (keeps the text around the tables) or one sheet per table.
- Click Convert to Excel and open the .xlsx in Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers or LibreOffice.
Frequently asked questions
Will numbers be real numbers I can add up?
Yes. Thousands separators, currency signs, percentages and negatives in brackets are read into Excel number formats, so $1,234.50 becomes the number 1234.5 shown as $1,234.50, and 12.5% becomes 0.125 shown as 12.5%. European numbers like 1.234,56 are recognised too. Dates become Excel dates.
Does it work with tables that have no lines?
Yes. Ruled tables are read cell by cell from their lines, and tables without lines are split into columns from the way the text lines up, as in bank statements, invoices and financial reports. Text that wraps inside a cell stays in one cell.
What happens to headings that span several columns?
They become merged cells, so a "2024" heading over four quarter columns stays over those four columns. Headings that wrap onto two or three lines are joined into one cell.
What if a table runs over several pages?
With one sheet per table, a table that carries on over the next page continues on the same sheet, and its repeated header row is left out.
Can I convert a scanned PDF to Excel?
Yes. Scanned pages are pictures, so the tool offers to read them with OCR in your browser first. Check the numbers afterwards, since OCR can misread a few characters. You can also make a searchable PDF with OCR PDF and convert that.
