Letter of recommendation (LOR) for students
An academic letter of recommendation from a professor or project guide for a student applying to master's, MBA or PhD programmes abroad. It follows the structure admissions committees look for: how and for how long the recommender knows the student, a ranking against other students, specific examples of academic ability and project or research work, personal qualities, and a clear overall endorsement.
Templates
- Letter of recommendation (LOR) for student (document): An academic letter of recommendation from a professor for a student applying to MS, MBA or PhD programs abroad, with how the recommender knows the student, ranking, specific examples and a clear endorsement.
- Reference letter (document): A warm, specific letter of recommendation for a colleague, employee or student applying for a job or program.
- Statement of purpose (SOP) (document): A statement of purpose for MS, MBA and other master's applications abroad, structured the way admissions committees read it: motivation, academics, experience, why this program and career goals. Written with Indian applicants in mind.
How to use these templates
- Students: ask your recommender early, at least four to six weeks before the deadline, and give them your CV, transcript, SOP draft and a short list of the work you did with them.
- Recommenders: open the template and tell the AI how you know the student and two or three specific moments, for example "taught her Machine Learning, 94/100, top 2 of 120; final-year crop yield project, 8% error".
- Replace every general claim with an example or a number, and make sure the ranking is one you can honestly stand behind.
- Print on department letterhead and sign, or paste into the university's online recommendation form, which most programmes now use.
What makes an LOR persuasive
- Specific beats superlative. One story about how the student handled a hard problem is worth more than "brilliant" and "hardworking" together.
- Rankings carry weight. "Top 5% of the 300 students I have taught" tells a committee more than any adjective, and many online forms ask for one directly.
- Choose recommenders who know you well over ones with grand titles. A project guide who supervised you for a year writes a better letter than a head of department who barely knows you.
- Your letters should cover different sides of you, such as classroom ability, research and teamwork, rather than repeating the same points.
- If you are asked to draft your own letter, tell your recommender. Committees notice when every letter in a file sounds the same, and many universities expect recommenders to write and submit letters themselves.
Frequently asked questions
How many LORs do I need for an MS?
Most programmes ask for two or three. Usually at least two should be academic, from professors or project guides, and a third can be from a manager if you have work experience.
What is the difference between an academic and a professional LOR?
An academic LOR comes from a teacher and focuses on coursework, projects and research ability. A professional LOR comes from a manager and focuses on work results, responsibility and teamwork.
How long should a letter of recommendation be?
About one page, or 400 to 700 words. Long enough for two or three concrete examples, short enough that a committee reads all of it.
Can the same LOR be sent to several universities?
Usually, yes, with the university and programme name changed. A sentence on why the student suits each programme makes it stronger.
