Book report template

Two book report templates with the same structure: a written report, and a seven-slide presentation for presenting the book to the class. Both cover the book details, setting, main characters, a beginning-middle-end summary, themes with an example, a favourite passage and your own review with a rating. They suit students from upper primary to high school.

How to use these templates

  1. Finish the book first, and note page numbers for two or three moments you might quote.
  2. Open the written report or the slides and tell the AI the title, author and your grade. Ask it to set up the sections rather than summarise the book for you.
  3. Write the summary, themes and review in your own words from your notes, and add a quote with its page number.
  4. Download as Word or PDF to hand in, or as PowerPoint if you are presenting.

Writing a book report that stands out

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a book report and a book review?

A book report summarises and explains the book, usually for school. A book review is mainly an opinion piece that judges the book for other readers. This template ends with a short review of your own.

How long should a book report be?

Follow your teacher's instructions. Without them, one to two pages for middle school and two to three for high school is typical.

Can I present my book report as slides?

Yes. Use the book report presentation, which has seven slides with the same sections, including one for your favourite quote.

Is it okay to use AI for a book report?

Check your teacher's rules. AI cannot replace reading the book, and its summaries of books can be wrong, so write the content from your own reading.
