Internship cover letter template
A cover letter for students and recent graduates applying for internships, when your strongest material is coursework, projects and campus activities. It also tells the employer the dates you are available, which internship recruiters need first.
Templates
- Internship cover letter (document): A cover letter for students applying for an internship, showing coursework, projects and eagerness to learn when you have little work experience yet.
- Cover letter (document): A friendly, focused cover letter that connects your experience to the role in four short paragraphs.
How to use these templates
- Open the internship cover letter and paste the internship posting.
- Tell the AI your degree, year, one relevant class project and one activity, such as a club role or part-time job.
- Add your start date and how many weeks you can work, and whether you need the internship for academic credit.
- Download as PDF and upload it with your resume, or paste it into the application form.
Writing an internship cover letter with little experience
- Open with your year and degree, then the internship title and season, for example "third-year economics student applying for your Summer 2027 analyst internship".
- Describe one class project the way you would describe a job: the problem, what you did, the tools you used and the result.
- Say what you want to learn at this company specifically. Internships are partly an investment by the employer, and they want to see why theirs.
- State your availability clearly. Many students lose offers because their exam dates or term start clash with the programme.
- Ask a careers adviser or professor to read it; they have seen what works for your field.
Frequently asked questions
How long should an internship cover letter be?
Three or four short paragraphs, about 250 to 300 words. Recruiters read hundreds during internship season.
What if the internship is unpaid or for credit?
Mention if you need it for academic credit and when your school needs paperwork signed. It saves a back-and-forth later.
Can I mention my GPA in the cover letter?
Only if it is strong and relevant, or the posting asks for it. It belongs on your resume first.
